Glossary

The words Chop and this guide use, with what they mean.

AutomationA control that moves by itself during the song, following a curve you drew or recorded. Automate a parameter
BarsThe length of a track's pattern, and the number of bars its sample is fitted to. A box in the Playback group. Tempo, bars and timing
BlockOne place in a pattern where a slice plays: a box in the lane under the waveform. One slice can have many blocks. Slices and blocks
Bottom panelThe knobs at the bottom of the Sample screen: Slices, Selected Slices, Roll.
BypassAn effect switched off but left in its slot.
CCControl change: the MIDI message a knob or fader of a controller sends.
ChopTo cut a sample into slices.
CursorThe place on the Multitrack ruler where Play starts. Start from another bar
EditedThe word at the right of the lane when the pattern is no longer the original order of the slices.
EnvelopeHow the level of a slice changes while it plays: Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release. Change one slice
FitA key of the Playback group. On: the sample follows the tempo and the bars. Off: it plays at its original speed.
GridThe step things snap to. The toolbar's Grid is for moving blocks, parts and points; the menu beside Chop grid is for cutting and for rolls.
InsertAn effect placed on one strip of the mixer, in one of its four slots. Use VST3 effects
LaneThe strip of blocks under the waveform; also the strip where automation is drawn.
Loop (toolbar)On: playback repeats. Off: it plays once.
Loop (Sample screen)A key of the Playback group: repeats the selected slice.
Loop rangeThe bars the song repeats over, drawn on the strip above the Multitrack ruler.
MIDI LearnLinking a control of Chop to a knob or fader of a controller. Map a control
Mono / PolyWhether a new block cuts the one before it (Mono) or rings over it (Poly).
NormalizeRaising a sample to full level.
One-shotA sample played at its original speed, not fitted to bars: a hit, a note, a phrase.
PageA view that takes the place of the screen: settings, MIDI Mappings, VST3 Plugins, import, record.
PartOne play of a track's pattern, placed on the Multitrack timeline. What a part is
Part markersTwo triangles in the ruler above the waveform: where a pattern's parts start and end in the song.
PatternThe blocks of a track in their order: what the track plays. Chop's menus call it the sequence.
PlacementPlace: grid or Place: free. Whether blocks and cuts snap to the grid.
PlayheadThe line that moves while something plays.
Read / Write (R / W)The keys on a Multitrack row that make automation play (R) or play and be edited (W).
RegionIn older projects only: the part of a sample that plays. New projects use the whole sample.
ResampleTo render a track through its effects into a new sample. Resample a track
ReturnA mixer strip that holds an effect shared by several tracks through their sends.
RollA block that repeats the start of its slice. Make a roll
SampleThe audio a track holds: one file, or a piece of one.
Selected SlicesThe group of the bottom panel whose knobs change only the selected blocks.
SendA knob that copies part of a track to a return.
SequenceChop's name for a pattern. The automatic sequence is the original order of the slices.
SliceA piece of the sample between two cuts, with a number. Chop a sample into slices
Slices (group)The group of the bottom panel whose knobs change the selected slice wherever it plays.
SlotOne of the four places for an effect on a mixer strip.
Snap to zero crossingsThe magnet key: cuts land where the wave crosses zero, to avoid clicks.
StemAn exported file with one track of the song.
StripOne column of the Mixer: a track, a return or the master.
SwingA delay on every second step, for a shuffle. Add swing
TakeOne recording made on the record page.
TimingHow a sample follows the tempo: Stretch, Varispeed, Beats or Original.
Tool rowThe row of keys just above the waveform.
Top panelThe track's settings at the top of the Sample screen: Playback, Sound, Envelope, Filter, Inserts / Sends.
TrackOne of the eight players. It holds one sample.
TransientThe start of a hit in the audio, where Chop transients cuts.
VariationOne of the four patterns (A to D) of a track. Variations A to D
VST3The plugin format Chop loads, for effects.
